time

This started out as my Facebook status update, but it got way too long so I decided to just make it a blog post....

The past 18 or so months have been among the most difficult ones yet for my family. We have been through some things we would not have otherwise imagined.

We learned of Jon's mom's cancer diagnosis but were given some hopeful options including surgery. My five year old had three ER visits (two in one week!), one ambulance ride, and a diagnostic test (which, thankfully, turned out negative). I had one ER visit that turned into a short hospital stay. My next hospital stay seven months later was, of course, for our little bundle of joy's birth. We made countless visits to both the hospitals in Williamsburg and Richmond to visit Jon's ailing parents. In the midst of all this, our church was robbed and many thousands of dollars worth of electronic equipment was gone. A lot of Jon's personal equipment and some of his instruments vanished. We learned that stuff is just stuff.

We were called to his father's bedside when we were told we would lose him the first time in May, 2011. Incredibly, he pulled through and we were thankful. A couple weeks later, just before her scheduled surgery, we learned that Jon's mother's cancer was consuming her body and surgery was no longer an option. Two short months later, she did not pull through. She lost her cancer battle on July 19, 2011, one year ago. Since then, I have had many discussions with my boys about cancer, death, and things I did not previously imagine talking about with a 3 and 5 year old. We have also had to look into assisted living facilities long before we ever thought we would.

Jon is still working on his MDiv and we can now see the light at the end of the tunnel. I am incredibly proud of him for all the hard work he has invested and for his commitment to our family, our church, and his school work. We never would have made it through these months without the support and love from our families, our church family, our friends, and our God. We are blessed!!! He is our provider, our sustainer, and we are grateful.

bargain hunting

One of my current favorite past times is bargain hunting. It doesn't happen nearly as much as it used to, but the thrill of a good great deal makes me happy. When we became a one-income family, we decided to make some big changes. There are many areas in which we cut the fat, so to speak. When it comes to our clothing, we rarely (if ever?) buy anything full-price. I love to shop the sales and figure out how to get the most for my money. That is one reason I just can't miss Gymboree's semi-annual sale. This picture shows my best find. Note the original price of $56.95. It's a nice, fairly heavy weight jacket. Probably the heaviest Dylan will need unless we have a big snowfall. Anyway, I paid $5.60 for a brand new Gymboree jacket. Not bad!

happy graduation!

It's hard to believe that my oldest baby is now a school age boy.  He is so excited to be in Kindergarten in the fall, and has asked nearly every day for the past several months how many days until he goes to the school down the street.  I have him registered, but it's still hard for me to wrap my head around the fact that he'll be gone for so many hours of the day at school next year.  He's ready.  And me?  Well, ready or not, here we go!

He has always been incredibly self-motivated.  This was apparent when I potty trained him.  I have to use the whole "potty training" term loosely, because the truth is that he pretty much trained himself.  One day, when he was 2 years and 8 months old, he refused to allow me to change him into his first morning diaper.  No diaper means underwear in our home and that's what he wanted.  He trained himself that day.

This year, his reading has become proficient.  I would love to take credit for this, but he has intrinsic motivation to learn and do things himself.  He is a great reader and I am proud of him.  His most recent interest is learning about numbers and "doing math."  He enjoys "doing math" on this notepad.  Once again, I'm so proud of my little guy that I had to take a picture to document his little brain at work.  I love that he loves to learn.  It gives me great pleasure to see each of my children figure out the world around them.

Just today, Chloe learned to clap.  Of course, we all clapped for her once she figured out this great trick.  They're all growing up, and that is sometimes hard to swallow, but I want to try my best to take one day at a time and not take these moments for granted.

6 months already?

How is that even possible? Chloe turned six months old on the 22nd and today we had her appointment to find out just how much she has grown. I thought Tucker was a chunky baby! But now we have our sweet Chloe who is just about off the charts. She is now eating small amounts of solids (avocado, applesauce, oatmeal cereal) in addition to her preferred entree of choice (Mommy). She still can hardly even stand the sight of a bottle so just about all of this is courtesy of me. :) Here are the boys at 6 months: Dylan and Tucker

And here's Chloe. 22 pounds, 14 ounces and 27 1/2 inches long.Posted by Picasa

happy valentine's day

Happy Valentine's Day, Mommy!!!!

Those words greeted me this morning bright and early. Dylan had been looking forward to this day for weeks and today it finally arrived. I have no idea how my five year old became so enamored with Valentine's Day. I'm certainly not the hugest fan of a day that seems to have "marketing ploy" written all over it. It's nice that there's a day set apart to show our loved ones we care, but shouldn't we be doing that more often than just once a year? I guess that's part of the reason I just don't think it's a huge deal.

And somehow, this holiday became one of Dylan's favorite days. Just about every day during these last couple weeks, he asked if it was time to write cards for his classmates yet. One day, he sat down to make cards for me out of construction paper, markers, crayons, scissors, and stickers. He was having so much fun while I wondered where in the world he found this Valentine's Day love.

Dylan gave me all the valentines today that he made for me and I loved them all. He had worked hard coloring hearts, writing his name, drawing a picture of himself throwing snowballs at his daddy, cutting out heart shapes, but most of all, working hard to give me something just because he loves me. These are some of the best gifts of all.

As a parent, I did my duty and picked up a couple Star Wars valentines from Target a few days ago. They were on sale and it was sort of an afterthought. I suppose I should have put more effort into making this a special holiday for them. I had no idea how much it would mean to the boys at such young ages (3 and 5). It's easy to forget that in the day-to-day, I am making memories for them. Memories that will last a lifetime.

Dylan's teachers mentioned to me today while I was at his class Valentine's Day party that he had told them all about the special projects he made for me and about the Start Wars valentine I gave him this morning. When I got to his party, he gave me a big hug and kiss and wished me a "Happy Valentine's Day" for maybe the fourth time today. Fast forward to bedtime and Dylan gave me yet more Valentine's Day hugs and kisses. I'm beginning to reevaluate my treatment of this "marketing ploy" of a holiday. Perhaps next year, we'll begin a fun family Valentine's Day tradition. I'm sure my tender-hearted little boy would be thrilled!

date night

Jon and I were blessed to have a date night last night! This is a pretty infrequent occurrence. It just so happened that his Friday night class was cancelled last night (woo hoo!!!) and a sweet as can be church friend/family gave us some movie tickets and a free night of babysitting for Christmas. Needless to say, we "cashed in" our gift last night. We had dinner AND a movie! I honestly can't remember the last time we did both those things in one evening. It was wonderful to spend some time with Jon and do something we would have done at any given time before having children. We learned a valuable lesson, though. Make a plan next time! We figured we'd just play it by ear which is what I do best!

I'm not a planner/organizer at heart so I like to go with the flow. Last night, this meant getting a quick-ish dinner that did not involve chicken nuggets, ketchup, or cutting food into little pieces for another human. We knew there were a bunch of movies at the theater starting in the 1/2 hour between 7:30-8:00 pm, so we'd just choose the one closest to the time we arrived. So, last night we settled in to watch "The Grey" with Liam Neeson. I like Liam Neeson. I like grey/gray (whatever). Sidenote, I was even wearing a grey shirt ;). Movie Spoiler Alert: This was probably one of the top three most depressing movies I've ever seen! BUT, for some reason I walked out of the theater with a little skip in my step and a smile on my face. Why? I went to dinner and a movie on a date with my husband while my children were at home with two people I completely trust. Life is good.

back to diapering

Remember a while ago (okay, years ago) when I did my cloth diaper experiment? You can read about it here and here if you would like a refresher. ;) Well, it's gone well and has turned into much more than an experiment. I have fully delved into the cloth diaper world. Did you even know that such a world existed? It has its own lingo and everything. AIO, AI2, Pockets, Prefolds, Liners, Snappis, and so much more. Whew! It's a bit overwhelming at first but I'm pretty used to it now. In fact, I decided to take on a project and convert my aplix (another word for velcro) Bumgenius diapers (that little Dylan modeled a few years ago on this blog) into snap diapers. The aplix wasn't holding up over time and they would come loose while Chloe was wearing them which would then scratch her chubby little legs. You get the picture. It was time for me to do something about it. I watched a couple Youtube videos and decided that I could figure it out myself. All I needed was a pair of Snap Pliers and some snaps. I am not crafty at all. Truth be told, many of my craft attempts end up as a failure heap somewhere in my trash can. But, I was bound and determined to get some more use out of these diapers that were, in my opinion, no longer usable. I ordered the snap pliers from KamSnaps and watched the videos. I was ready! I finished my first diaper and was thrilled with the results. Even I could do this! And just to prove it, I am posting a picture of Chloe wearing a grasshopper Bumgenius SNAP diaper!
